Recital with the Trio Rafale (Daniel Meller, Flurin Cuonz, Maki Wiederkehr)

Date: 08. - 08.11.2023 19.00

Two string instruments meet a kind of percussion in today's recital - by its construction the piano indeed belongs to the percussive instruments. How well this encounter can work is shown by the history of the Trio Rafale, in which very different forms of dialogue have developed.

Joseph Haydn's G major trio represents an early state of the genre. The piano dominates over large parts, violin and cello bravely pull along - except in the middle movement, in which the violin contributes a substantial counterpart to the piano part. Particularly effective in this piece is the wild finale, in which the performers can show off their versatility - it's fun. In the 150 years that followed, the piano trio has changed considerably; in Bedřich Smetana's G minor trio, it is palpable. Communication at eye level takes place here, and in the process the three instruments, so different from each other, combine to form a unity of their own kind - even the piano begins to sing. The highly emotional work, written by Smetana after the death of his daughter, leaves no one cold.

The Trio Rafale

Pianist Maki Wiederkehr, violinist Daniel Meller and cellist Flurin Cuonz, all Swiss born in 1986, met while studying at the Zurich University of the Arts. In 2008, they formed the trio Rafale, named after the French word for the gust of wind. In 2011 the trio participated in two of the most prestigious chamber music competitions in Melbourne and in 2014 in Osaka, winning first prize both times. Trio Rafale now performs all over the world, touring Japan and Hawaii, traveling to South Korea, making guest appearances at the Lucerne Festival, Prague Spring, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and Regensburg Chamber Music Festival, London's Wigmore Hall, Berlin's Philharmonie, Frankfurt's Alte Oper and Beethoven-Haus Bonn. His latest release brings together Franz Schubert's works for piano trio on a double CD.
