Rail 2050: the right step for a sustainable transport policy?

Date: 04. - 04.11.2024 18.00 - 19.30

We are heading for Switzerland's 10 million population. The population's mobility needs are unbroken. On November 24, we will be voting on the expansion of the highway network. The rail network is also to be further expanded. This was decided by the Federal Council in 2023 with the Rail 2050 perspective.

Railroad experts also criticize these plans. The planned expansion steps are mainly politically motivated, planned from the top down and endanger the substance of public transport.

We discuss current and future transport policy, transport development and sustainability with one of the most prominent critics, Thomas Küchler, Director of Südostbahn (SOB).

Thomas Küchler, Chairman of the Executive Board of Schweizerische Südostbahn AG (SOB), has headed Südostbahn since 2010. The railroad company with around 900 employees operates in eastern and central Switzerland. Küchler is a trained civil engineering draughtsman and later trained as a civil engineer HTL/FH. The 63-year-old from Schwyz worked for SBB for twelve years. Küchler is married, has two grown-up children and lives in Seewen SZ.

The discussion will be moderated by Andreas Jäggi.
