Mr. Dahinden, please explain the elections in the USA to us!

Date: 10. - 10.10.2024 18.00 - 19.30

On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, elections will be held in the USA. A new president will be elected, as well as the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate. There will also be gubernatorial elections in eleven states.

Of course, the biggest question is who will win the 60th presidential election in US history, Donald Trump or Kamala Harris. A great deal depends on this decision, not only in the USA but also around the world, as the president of what remains the world's strongest nation in economic and military terms wields a great deal of power.

The outcome of the election is likely to be very important for Europeans and their security policy in particular. We would like to talk to Martin Dahinden, former top diplomat and Swiss ambassador to the USA, about the political situation in the USA and the peculiarities of the American electoral system. We will also be asking him about the political situation less than a month before the election and the potential impact on Europe and Switzerland in particular. We will also discuss the role of Congress in the political structure of the USA as well as the system of checks and balances and its future.

The Lilienberg Talk will be moderated by Christoph Vollenweider.
